In the past, I have seen some avatars that I did not know what they were. I have been curious what they are, and why do some people use the most recognisable ones. My avatar is a gold coin given to my grandfather, by the city of Welland for his service in the great war. will be interested in reading others stories

For those who don't know, the Greek words "MOLON LABE" (ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ) are what King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans at Thermopylae said to the demand of the Persian King and his remaining thousands when told to lay down his arms and surrender.(after three days of fighting his force of 18,000 was considerably less) Leonidas' response, "Come and Take".

As a US Marine Corps Veteran and very "American" citizen, these are at the very core of beliefs for me to protect myself and my family and others through the rights given to me by God the Creator of the Universe as set forth in the Constitution of the United States. Please read the quote in my signature box.

Don't have one. Never could figure out why it's necessary or needed.

Mine is the obverse of a 1911 British Half Crown I bought a few years ago.

No particular reason that it's my avatar other than that it's a really nice coin, and KGV is one of my favorite portraits on British coins.

Mine is an Indian copy of a Hun copy of a pre-Islamic Persian drachm of Peroz I, who was captured and held ransom by the Huns in the 480s. Called a Gadhaiya Paisa (roughly translated to "donkey penny"--or more specifically a three letter word not allowed by the filters) these are a vast and criminally under-studied field of numismatics, where I have focused most of my research and collecting budget.

My avatar is the highest grade example I own of the most striking and unusual type from that series. It's one of my favorite coins.

I spend 95% of my time on this site from my phone, so I often forget about avatars since I can't see them!

Besides adding some personality to the forum, it's a lot easier to find posts from specific people when quickly scrolling through a thread. Looking for JBuck's response to a comment about Ikes? A follow-up post from the OP, or two posts in a row from the same person? Someone you know to have special insight (or someone you know you're going to disagree with)? All easy to see at a glance.

Mine, with a larger version linked in my signature, is a silver round from the Cartoon Celebrities series about 35 years ago. It's my favorite comic book character -- his real power is creativity to work around problems and strength of will to make things happen.

Aoraki/Mt Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand. My avatar is a stylised representation of Aoraki/Mt Cook. As you may have guessed, Aoraki is the Maori name (think Denali/Mt McKinley).

Mine is a pre-decimal British nickel-brass threepence dated the year of my birth. I chose it because these were the first coins I can remember seeing: before I started to collect coins, I used to like playing with them and trying to balance one on top of another! I also like the portcullis design: I think the 1953-67 reverse designs were much better than any coins the UK has had since!

This question pops up occasionally. I was stationed at Soesterberg Air Base, The Netherlands (89-92) and this was our "Friday Patch", which was a portion of the Squadron Patch.

The insignia was designed by the Walt Disney Studios during World War II to symbolize the squadron's mission of searching for enemy submarines operating in groups called "wolfpacks" in the Caribbean. In December 1942, the commanding General, Army Air Force, approved the design as the official insignia.

In 1959, the 32nd became the only USAF unit in the world authorized to bear the Royal Crest of another country, when the Crown and Wreath were added to the famed "wolfhound" design.
The crown symbolizes royalty, while the wreath and oranges represent an orange tree, a traditional symbol of the Dutch Royal Family - The House of Orange - who are direct descendants of William of Orange, the first Prince of the Netherlands.

This unique honor was granted in recognition of the unit's contribution to the defense of The Netherlands and graphically illustrates the 32nd's closes tiers with the Royal Netherlands Air Force.

Mine is the 1883 Hawaii Dala. I now collect only coins of the U.S., but I've collected every type of world, medieval, ancient, and token type imaginable.

That Dala reminds me of my decision to have my last collection the same as my very first collection - U.S. only.

Selling other collections and putting those funds into my coins has been a lot of fun.

It's nice to look at a $20 Gold that I bought from selling a Frazetta portfolio.

i collect canadian victorian large cents heavily searching for varieties and I found this 1882 double die obverse on ebay for $10 which is amoung the rarest varieties but to top it off I think this will tie or maybe beat the highest graded one on PCGS , not to mention I think the victorian large cent obverse is the most beautiful coin out there imo
