This is my first post so go easy. I have several Carson City Silver dollars I inherited. Many of them are uncirculated in the GSA cases. I have been reading up on coin grading but I'm still pretty confused about the differences between the various MS grades.

I have attached a couple of photos of one of the coins and I would appreciate any help on estimating their grade and any comments about why they would be graded as such.

Thanks in advance.

beernutz,
Welcome to the CC forums.
When you get into MS grades, sometimes all it takes it a couple small marks on the coin to go from MS64 down to MS63 or lower. Even Professional grading companies such as PCGS & NGC can give the same coin a different grade. So its not an exact science for anyone.

That being said,That's a beautiful CC Morgan you have there. I would give it somewhere in the MS60 possibly MS61 range. I wouldn't guess higher because of a number of contact (bag) marks under the eagles wings on the reverse and some light but numrous contact marks on Miss Liberty's cheek, neck & in front of her forhead. Bag mark are caused form the coin being bumped against other coins in the original mint bags.
If you have more CC Morgans, feel free to post pictures.

Welcome aboard, beernutz!
I think the marks on the face may be a little exaggerated because of the beautiful frostiness, so I'll give her an ms-63 as the grade you might expect from ngc or pcgs. Nice semi-prooflike obverse, too!

The photos are great. I would say MS 61. From the looks I would guess this to be in a GSA holder and would not recommend getting it graded as you will not get significantly more for it than you will get by it just being in the GSA and maybe even less.

Hi Beernutz, welcome aboard!

I'd be a little more generous on the grade. This looks like an easy MS-63 to me, especially since the grading services tend to apply the "CC bump" when grading Carson City coins. This coin is beautifully frosty and well-struck. The obverse does look somewhat proof-like which is a plus. I believe that the 1878-CC is not too common in GSA holders and this coin will probably carry a premium because it is in that holder, so don't crack it out! If you wanted to have it graded NGC will grade GSA dollars without removing them from the case.

Very nice coin, and congratulations on the inheritance. I'd certainly like to see what else you have, so please post more photos if you have a chance.

Oh by the way, your pictures are excellent!

Bag marks are heavy, definitely nice contrast, but MS-60 obverse for me judging by my own silver dollar with similar amounts of contact marks. Reverse looks 63-64, though.

Wow, what a friendly and helpful forum, thanks for your comments everyone.

I have a suitcase full of coins which I inherited, including about 10 different Carson City dollars in the GSA cases. I've been reading some of SuperDave's posts concerning digital photograhpy of coins in order to make better coin pictures. When I think I've made some improvement, I'll post some more pictures.

MS-62.5; all of the above comments are quite expansive, so there's no need to pile on--your pictures are just fine, congrats on your inheritance and welcome!
