I started to organize my nickels a little more by putting some in plastic roll holders. About 250 of em had vedigres on em. It just broke my heart seeing that. I had all my coins in a jar before. My next project is to put all my wheaties in rolls. Who knows how many of them have vedigres on em.

vedigres=a greenish blue patina that forms on copper, brass, or bronze surfaces

Wait, did you say nickel? That's a bit odd - it normally forms on copper alloys. Are you sure it's verdigris instead of like let's say PVC? If it's PVC, there is hope.

Quote: Wait, did you say nickel? That's a bit odd - it normally forms on copper alloys. True enough, but US nickels are an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel.

What a bummer! Most Jefferson nickels are 75% copper, so verdigris isn't too unlikely given the proper conditions. Older Canadian that are 100% Ni are certainly immune!

gxseries: Show me a picture of a coin with PVC. The patina that formed on these nickels look alot like vedigres. I'm just glad that my buffalso dont have any on em. I just wished people would stop using vinegar to clean there coins.

Sorry to hear about your nickels! Maybe you can save some of them. They weren't valuable were they?

None were really valuable but it was a sad sight. I already took all the good nickels out and away from the vedigres ones. I put all my vedigres coins in another container. Now I'm just waiting on BADTHADS invention to come out on the market. I could really use it lol. I'm just gonna hold onto all the vedigres coins till someone finds a cure for the bronze cancer. I'm gonna go through all the wheaties tomorrow and seperate them. After seeing them nickels I am not looking forward to tomorrow.

Like 1913-V I'm keeping an eye on this thread: https://goccf.com/t/30324Some of it looks very promising. I even donated a few of my verdigris cents to the cause.

1913-V, it's just that I am not too aware of such nickel-copper alloy forming verdigris but I suppose it's possible. If you have spare acetone lying around, do try it and see if it works. Otherwise you might want to use a toothpick for the scarcer or key dates and savage them. Sorry to hear about the damage - I had similar damage but it was a nasty chemical spill.

Well, whatever it is infecting your coins that wasn't there before.....brings up one important point.......IF IT WASN'T THERE BEFORE, WHAT'S CAUSING IT TO FORM ?....Meaning how are you storing these coins ?....airtight and humidity free ?......or did you have a few already infected with the "black death" that spread to the others? You're seperating them and that's good, but it might be a "storage" issue too.

I finished the nickels with about 500 with vedigres. Working on wheat pennies now and 200 infected so far. I'm seriously losing interest in coins after this past week. I really need a good find in rolls to boost my mood up.

"...airtight and humidity free ?" I suspect a little more than humidity promoted verdigris on Jeffersons. Something reactive may have been left in the container, or got in later?

I had all my nickels and pennies together for a while. I never heard of vedigres until recently and I wished I heard of it sooner.
