What would you grade this, and what's the max you would pay?

Imo, I think the particular die pair will have some role in scarcity and value.
I don't have the books to look this one up--maybe someone here does?

Hi Shadow,
This coin is a grading challenge. The obverse appears to grade VG-10 at best. There is very little head detail, the hair is almost fully blended, and rims are not complete. That silvery area along the left rim looks like a potential problem: damage, corrosion, an attempted repair, solder residue?
Conversely, the reverse looks F-15 or maybe a bit better. Although there is almost no wing feather detail, most of the lines in the shield are visible and that according to PCGS is VF detail. The rims are complete. Many breast feathers are clearly visible which is not always the case even for EF coins.
Overall I'd peg it at F-12. If there is no damage this coin would probably be worth up to $500 or so. I'd prefer to see it in a PCGS slab before I would consider a purchase.
Kurt is probably correct that certain die pairs carry a premium price. I have no clue about that....sorry!
Rest in Peace

But wouldn't the reverse be much worse? It seems faint in spots. I was trying to bargain with this guy an I thought this coin graded no better than G6 over all. I guess I'm not familiar with old coins. He went down 50 bucks but if I could get it for 450, would that be a good deal? Maybe I could arrange a return policy so that I'd have time to get it slabbed. Which company would be the best for these types of coins?

I've seen early quarters with strong obverse and weak reverse, and vice versa. I think it's more difficult to get a strong reverse as many are very weak in the center.

If you could get this coin for $450 with a money-back guarantee that it would slab, I'd call it a good deal. I would go with PCGS. Even if they only call it VG-10 it would still be a lot of coin for the money. You won't easily find this much reverse detail on another quarter in that price range.

I'm still looking for a nice Draped Bust quarter for my type set. It is getting really hard to find an attractive example for anything like a decent price!
Rest in Peace

I'll buy it then, pending the opinions of others (I thought it was lower grade, but I don't have much experience so I was being very conservative), but I'll see if I can get a return policy in which I'm allowed to send it back later if it grades G6 or worse from PCGS.

Oh yeah the price. Its a bit high for a Very Good, and I doubt it would grade fine, VG10 at most. Just my thoughts, PP
