Ohhh man. The only coin I was really interested in from the Heritage Long Beach auctions, and although I thought I bid very strong (over 2 and a half times market value), I was still outbid on her! Graded by pcgs, what do you guys think? Image: 1917slqrev1.jpg84.42 KB Image: 1917slq1.jpg89.56 KB

With the dings to both knees and some reverse scratches I say MS 62 to MS 64...nice coin! Is that doubling on the 9 and the 7? Or is it the photo?

MS63-64, I just noticed the dings, but they're not THAT conspicuous, overall appeal is good.

I would say MS60 at best. That ding on the knee will really take it down, and a couple strong scratches between the eagles wings. Possible FH but I can't tell for sure with the toning covering the head. Beautiful coin.

That's some beautiful original toning and I'm not surprised Hadleydog was going for it! There must have been another toning fan that wanted it even more.
It sure looks like there is some rub on Liberty's right thigh and lower leg and on both knees. The shield center has a light patch but that looks more like an absence of toning rather than rub. The bagmarks are noticeable but not too distracting. The head is full.
If PCGS was really cranky I could see an AU58FH grade. However, I'm betting they called it mint state and boosted the grade all the way to MS-65FH due to the toning. It is a terrific coin!

A coin I just loved, in spite of the holder.......... Image: 1917slqslab.jpg67.98 KB

Whoa, that was some really strict grading. I wonder why they didn't add the FH designation? Full heads are common for 1917 Type 1 quarters and that head looks completely full to me....

I would have guessed MS60.

That's a nice coin, no matter the plastic. Doesn't an AU58 signify a better strike than even some MS grades? I seem to recall that applies to IHCs. Excepting a premium for nice toning, I for one just don't get paying for a decade of appreciation up front --but I do understand the excitement of bidding wars.

Crack it out and send it somewhere else, seriously. Until you get at least 62-63. The price difference is pretty heavy.

Jaobler, I think they really missed the boat on this one. It will find it's way into the right holder eventually. Kurt, I placed a single bid on this coin, which was the max I was willing to go and which turned out to be one bid too low. The new owner did not pay for a decade of appreciation upfront, he paid what the market commanded. I would buy that piece tommorow for that price, in a heartbeat.

"The new owner did not pay for a decade of appreciation upfront, he paid what the market commanded" Well, I sort of regret the comment, but all the same it was rather tongue-in-cheek. Please excuse it as my persistent skepticism on how collectibles are valued. I'm one to wonder about that "over 2 and a half times market value"--and what happens the next time?

That is such an excellent question. I formed my opinion of this coins value not by the priceguide and a published value but by the coin itself. I have been looking for one like this for awhile, and original, naturally toned eye appealing type 1 slq's just don't come along very often. Something I've heard said before (Tradedollarnut) has also rung true in my collecting experiences. Sometimes to own that special coin you've got to reach a little. And you know what? I have rarely lost money when it comes time to sell these special pieces, and they go fast.

It sounds like you know enough about this series to make very good calls. That's a great coin, and I hope you find one with similar details.
