I just won this raw coin in an online coin auction today, so needless to say I don't have the coin in hand yet.
The listing description stated only that it was a more common date coin in a better grade but when I enlarged the listing image of the obverse I noticed a few interesting areas that peaked my interest.
I'm familiar with Canadian coins as well as a few of the better known varieties and die pairings, particularly on the 1859 large cent so I knew what I was seeing was something, I just didn't know if it was of any significance.
So I did a little research and I believe it to be one of the inverted A over V doubled N varieties? And also the I in GRATIA doesn't appear to align with a denticle so Die 1?

Like I said, I'm a newb to Canadian varieties so any information would be greatly appreciated.

I'll post better pics after I get the coin in hand if needed but judging by these pics what do you think the coin would grade?

Thanks!

Great find!
There is no actual A/V 1872h.
It is die break A in VICTORIA.
The I is pointing to a denticle, not directly between denticles, so it is OBV2.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Someone had another question about the Vicky quarters on another site, so I had to look in Charlton about the obverses. I never knew there was a very easy way to tell the 1 from the 2. On a 1, the ribbon has the "V" offset to the right and the 2 has the "V" offset to the left

The money in these coins are in the quality or grade of the item. For me this is a 1872 - Obverse # 2 - Large 2 - H and in max EF grade but for me its VF. Book value between $70-$180 CAD.

What did you pay...

This is clearly a Die Break V. Also note the RP "N" as stated. Worth significantly more that $70-$180 posted above.

I paid $32 USD for the coin.

Below is a side by side of my coin and a known graded example of an 1872-H Canada 25¢ - Inverted A/V - Die 2

The effigies just look slightly different to me.....

Oh well, I'm beating a dead horse until I get the coin in hand and can post better pics.

So from what I have learned, am I to call this a Large 2/H, Die Break V, Repunched NA Variety?

Can anyone tell me the correct attribution for this variety as well as its approximate value?

Using the directly above photo, it is an OQ2. The doubling I don't know about, as I don't collect quarters.

JDRMCB - what is the source of that image? You say you found a good reference, and then copy material that isn't yours... the least you can do is cite your source or give credit to where the image came from...

Well, all in all not a bad cherrypick!

Bought coin for - $32
Sold coin for - $200
Net profit - $168

1872-H-Canada-25-Cent-A/V---N/N---Obverse-Die-1?

I never expected to get the outrageous money others on the Bay are asking, I just wanted to make a nice profit. Mission accomplished!

Back to cherrypicking....

That's a good buy for someone. It's a good clean not overly filled example of die break and the doubling. Very few collect these so the prices vary greatly depending on timing.
