*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***

I've been going through some Wheat pennies and noticed the D mint mark is distinctly different on one of the 1954 coins. The D on the coin (on the left hand side of the picture) is further from the 9 and more underneath the 5. Does this variation make the coin more valuable?

The mintmarks were punched into the die by hand during this era, so their location can vary widely.

Each hand punched mintmarked die produced hundreds of thousand coins each, there may have been 10 or more different dies used in any given year.

Mint marks can vary in depth, width, Be affected by strike/machine doubling, height, Damaged by contact damage, be polished down, Be affected with a damaged punch, show die wear and be affected by die flow. Being punched in by hand the locations can vary. So a lot of different factors can affect mint mark punch even with the same punch style.

Thanks for the great answers everyone. I knew I came to a good forum to ask such a question.

I just recently took up the hobby of collecting coins again after recently inheriting a nice collection from my late father.

I'll post a brief message in the Intro Forum when I get a chance.
