Greetings Everyone, I joined this online community since I had (and have) questions with regards to coin collecting. I'll post when I have a chance, but first I need to browse and read more of the forums. I'm not a complete novice, but still a beginner. I recently inherited a nice collection from my late father, although I had a somewhat small and passive collection already. I volunteered to catalog my father's coin collection using Microsoft Excel so that the distribution of coins between my two brothers and me would have close to the same value. I used four online references: Whitman, NGC, Cointrackers, and The Spruce. Perhaps not the best references to use, but hopefully the range and averaged values I assigned to each coin made the assignments of the coins fairer than just a random distribution. (E.g. My older brother was assigned the 1877 Indian Head cent, so my younger brother and I received more of the Mercury dimes and 90% silver quarters). My brothers were impressed with my Excel workbook. :) I live in Central Texas NW of Austin. I'm a retired chemist (BSc. Chemistry, UT Austin, 1987) and microscopist (certified at McCrone Research Institute). I may need to buy a good top-light stereomicroscope for this coin-collecting hobby since I don't have access to the ones at my old job anymore! LOL I look forward to learning more from all the wonderful information contained in these forums. James

Regarding luvmyCAM's post. I'm not familiar with the label on that penny so can someone clarify? I know what MS and SP stand for but what does the AU58 and Close AM FS-901 refer to about that penny?

Its a die reverse die variety that wasnt supposed to be minted for circulation until 1993. This variety is pretty scarce in any grade. The A and M of America nearly touch thus its called the Close AM. AU- stands for almost uncircualted. F's-901 stands for its Fiivaz and Stanton listing number. If it has an F'S number the die has recognition as a major variety in the variety world. Like being a made man an F'S coin is a recognized variety in a way its a made coin. The designation does not neccessarily mean valuable its more for identification among the thousands of die variety.

@luvmyCam - thanks for the precise explanation, I appreciate it! The AU - (almost uncirculated) just makes me realize how much more I need to learn about the different classes that coins end up in.

Wanted to say Hello from Burnet County, a little west of you! Just joined myself and I'm also retired, Law Enforcement for 30+ years. Amazon has some nice USB plug in scopes. I started out on the less expensive side and purchased a Plugable scope. Has still pics and video with built in LED lighting. It takes a decent photo. Take care coinjem. Give a yell sometime.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
Howdy Tx CedarChopper. I'm in Burnet county too, near Bertram. One of my retirement projects is clearing cedar and hackberry on or bordering my property. lol Congratulations on a safe career in law enforcement.
