Medieval Cilician Armenia was a Christian Country surrounded by the Islamic World during the time of the Crusades.

Here is an excellent PDF on their coins and history: https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/v...armeniapdf/7

The coin I'm posting is an AR Dram/Tram of Levon I 1199-1219 King of Armenia

Obverse: King enthroned, Armenian Legend: LEVON KING OF ARMENIANS.
Reverse: Two Lions rampant with a Patriarchal Cross, Armenian legend: BY THE WILL OF GOD

Wonderful addition, Ron. I like the symmetry and the simplicity of the rendering.

Wow! Great find.
I've noticed coins from this series in auctions, and thought they were quite fairly priced compared to other contemporaneous coins, but that seems like a great bargain.

Great pick-up! Very interesting representation of lions--especially the mouths. I thought that they might be flowers until I read your description more closely.

I've just added two more of these to the collection, will post pictures later. One of the few reference books on Cilician Armenian coins is: "Coins of Cilician Armenian by Paul Z. Bedoukian" a must have for anyone interested in these coins. Just on Levon's I Trams there are several hundred variations for the one coin. The variations are defined by the obverse legend and by the different types of Crosses on the reverse. Reading the legends are difficult and need a little knowledge of Armenian script will go a long way. Until I have a better understanding of that I'm just going to work on the different Cross reverses. Just to build a complete set of this coin would take a life time to complete.

Cross extends through the border to form three Crosses

Closed border and just one Cross.
