Ok, so lately my cleaning attempts have ended up stripping the coins. I've been experimenting with some duds. But, I really like this coin, so I want to be careful. This is the way it came, haven't touch it other than a dry brush.

I'm trying to get more detail from the coin and it looks like there is a brown patina beneath the green one. The color doesn't concern me, but I don't want to remove both.

Just don't want to ruin this one.

Olive oil might darken it a bit and maybe improve the eye appeal, but there wouldn't be much additional detail to bring out by cleaning this one.

A year in oil might help emphasize the remaining detail.

You might want to look into soaking it in a 5% solution of sodium sesquicarbonate solution (made by mixing sodium bicarbonate with washing soda, i.e. sodium carbonate, in water). This is recommended for treating "bronze disease." I haven't tried it myself but am preparing to. There's a fair amount of info available on the internet, for example at http://www.crescentcitycoinclub.org...0Disease.pdf, which also gives you the recipe for the solution. Apparently if done properly it can remove green encrustations without harming the underlying metal. Whatever you try, good luck to you.
