Every time someone posts something about large cent erros and varieties, I head for the binder to check mine. Recently found one that has the single die clash of the beads in the reverse leaves(2011 Charlton pg.308). On the obverse, I found double lettering that resembles the example on page 311 of the Charlton book. The one in the book is listed as having all letters doubled, but the one I have is only doubled about half way. From the book, the C of VICTORIA is heavily doubled and has a notch, while mine is not notched and isn't doubled.
Anyone else have one with the two errors on the same coin?

I'm gonna chime-in here...

this is the Double GRATIA/REGINA...as I call it...it's one of the partial Double Die Obverses...(the other being Double CANADA/VICTORIA, and there is also a double CANADA/VICTORIA/REGINA)...these being distict from the "Heavy punch doubling" or the "Round the Clock Doubling"

the die clash on the reverse is NOT the single die clash of the beads in the reverse leaves(2011 Charlton pg.308). It's sort of a "half" single die clash.

you will note carefully that the beads in the die clash under the vine are NOT full...I've noticed this "half die clash" in the past, and since there are two much cooler reverse die clash types (the single and the multiple), I've ignored this type...which is only partially formed..

The Double GRATIA/REGINA is the 3rd most common 1881H Double Die Obverse subtype, with the most common one being the Double VICTORIA/CANADA

A cool coin....

I do grab the nice examples of the double GRATIA/REGINA, because it's rarely recognized by collectors...but I did manage to get one labeled as PCGS 1881H DDO....so PCGS will recognize it as a double die obverse (well...one of them anyways..LOL)...

The rarity goes: RTC (round the clock) (scarcest) < Double Vic/Can/Reg < Double Gratia/Regina < Heavy punch doubling < Double Victoria/Canada (most common)

Cheers

I quit trying to even number the number and variety of errors on the 1881's. For Terry .. almost any 1859 or 1881 will have 2 or more types of errors on one coin and the 1882's that aren't Obv 2's come next. The Reverse die clash below the beads is fairly hard to find ... though the incomplete one shows up more often. I don't know if it was once a full, single, deep "single" type of clash that wore away as the dies struck more coins or if if was always that way after the dies first "clashed". I find the "doubled" or "football" clashes a little easier to find than the singles.

The incomplete or half die clash is different from the single die clash.

The single die clash has 3 full dots under the vine:

Yes, C-V, I am fully aware of the difference between the single, double and half clash. They all were identically started by the dies clashing together without a planchet. I was the first one to post all three types on the CCRS over 15 years ago when you were just a beginner.

Reading that again, Dan .. it's still a great article. It really helps folks see what clashes really are and where to look.
