We're cleaning out my father in laws estate and I'd like to know if his 1981 proof sets are type 1 or 2. I don't know anything about coins at all so any help would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance

Better pics would help. Try taking them from slightly farther away, and not at an angle.

I'm pretty sure it isn't but the 2nd one could be type 2.

The others are not.

Type 1. Where the 'S' ends is blunt.

I agree, Type 1.

The distinction between them can be subtle. I bought an uncertified SBA Type 2 last year for my album and spent an awfully long time comparing it to online pictures to prove to myself that it really was Type 2. Depending on how I held the light, sometimes it looked like a Type 1, sometimes like a Type 2. I had to get my slabbed versions for a better comparison and even then it was a challenge to tell.

I'm going by the size of the "bulb" on the top of the S. On Type 2, it's more pronounced, noticeably bigger/wider than the rest of the letter. Yours are pretty consistent in width.
