This is a 1983 Kennedy half. I'm finding a few of these an not sure what it's called. The background appears to show cracks or rough areas like a bad strike or something?
Those are heavy die flow lines from your coin being struck in a Very Late Die State. It was struck with a very worn die. Here's what foundinrolls siad on this thread. http://goccf.com/t/32605
Quote: Hi,
This refers to the condition of a die used to strike coins and the progression of the deterioration of the die itself.
Basically, the more coins struck by a die, the more worn the die becomes.
So there are phrases, like Early Die State, Middle Die State, Late Die State and some combinations thereof that are applied when describing the appearance of a coin that was struck. You may see the initials used. EDS, MDS and LDS. I hope that Helps a little,
Quote: Perfect! late die state. Thanks for the info!
You're very welcome! I'm glad I was able to help you. You'll often see these die states the more you CRH. It is very interesting how much abuse these dies can take. And, To CCF!
