I just got this coin. I really like it. I have bought some OGH holders from PCGS, but not as old as this one. It's small and looks real old. How old is this holder? They say these OGH holders have undergraded coins and I believe it. The reverse is incredible on this coin. Looks MS 67 or higher. The obverse looks 63-64. Coin has very clean fields and a excellent strike. People on this site are tough but still want to know your thoughts on how old holder is and thoughts on getting a regrade. Thanks everyone.

Is it a "rattler"?

Resubmitting a coin certified decades ago is a proven tactic for enhancing a coin's grade (and value). But it's a personal decision.

This holder is smaller than the normal OGH holder, at first I thought maybe it was a fake cause I never seen one that small and old looking, but I looked it up and its all good.

This might be one of the first generation of holders.

Dot Matric printer.

Perforated edges on the grading insert?

1st gen rattled.

5 years ago the older holders did yield to upgrade recertification fairly frequently.

Today if a coin is still in an old holder it's because it just resurfaced from an older collection, or it can't get an upgrade.

At best you MIGHT get a 64 on this one, which isn't even worth the grading fee.

It appears to be slightly under-graded by todays standards but not worth the cost to get it into modern plastic. I'm a fan of the first generation rattler holders and would never consider cracking a coin out, especially a Morgan. Enjoy it as is, it's a wonderful piece of numismatic history.

I would think 63-64 and as moxking mentioned : not worth the expense of getting it re-graded!

Yeah I agree. Keep it in the rattler. You rarely see those at auctions anymore.

This is the 2nd rattler, the 1st used a 9-pin dot matrix printer and you can tell that pretty easily especially if you grew up with cheapo 9-pin printers in the 80s.

MS-64, not worth the cost to re-slab.

very nice Student. I would say mine looks as good if not a tad better than yours. Both reverses look great and my obverse I think looks a tad better. I really think my coin would grade MS 65 if I sent to NGC
