So I've been wanting to get a detector for quite a while now, and from all my readings online, it seems as though the Garrett ACE 250 is a good beginner's one that can pinpoint, etc. I will be trying to search parks, sports fields and old school play areas, but there is a LOT of gold in the mountains around me, and I was wondering if the ACE 250 would work for finding gold and/or silver in the ground / in shallow streams, etc. Any other advice / pros / cons about the ACE 250 would be great...or if there is/are other detectors that you guys recommend. Thanks in advanced!

For good solid information on the Garrett ACE 250 go to this forum.

There are other brands that offer good detectors for low initial investment. The Garrett ACE 250 is offering the most bang for the buck at the moment. That doesn't mean the other brands aren't as good just that it is offering the most performance for the least amount of money. If you're going to buy it there is a great video on youtube on how to pinpoint with it as it is different than the factory way of pinpointing and it works better. There's a dealer on this forum and you can check with them. If you can afford it, buy the Sniper coil and an extra lower rod. The coils are waterproof but not the control housing ( where you get your readouts).
HH no matter what you decide and post your find's or questions here. Great group of experienced MD'ers.

I just gave my son one for his birthday yesterday. It came highly recommended here and when a friend of mine from PA told me he had one and thought so much of it, I ordered one from Bigfred. I picked my kids up this evening from summer activities and carried it with me. We searched their playground and made one other playground stop on the way home. The real prize is the 25 cent Chuckie Cheese coin. One other thing. Don't buy SWAK jeans. The button snaps fall off. Total haul was $1.55. No silver but 4 pre 82 Lincolns nlp

Thanx for your purchase! Glad to hear you're having fun with it.

To the OP, the 250 will find gold, but it will have to be either coins, rings, or decent size nuggets. For small stuff, you need a specialty detector that's designed to find gold:

Gold detectors operate on a completely different frequency that is tuned for gold, and have specially shaped coils to get into tight places. They don't work nearly as well for general coin shooting.
