I was searching ebay last night for '50 & '51 proofs and came across this listing:

201716578778

What are your thoughts? It looks like an alloy problem, but how did it escape the Mint that way as a proof?

I don't know but I like it! Some type of alloy/planchet issue? Is that some type of hit or planchet flaw to the right of his ear?

I think this is from the little crinkly cello envelope that each coin was in the boxed proof sets of the time.
A lot of the pre 55 sets had darkened coins. That one spot above his ponytail in the wig kinda turns me off.
Rest in Peace

Looks like some form of chem reaction with the copper alloy portion. Maybe something on the cello drew it out?

I just expanded the seller pix, resolution is surprisingly good. The surface is GONE! something has been done to this one, it is pitted I think, take a look. I see levels.

It almost looks like something burned into the surface of the coin.

Thanks, everyone. I just thought it odd, and yeah, that spot above the ponytail is a deal killer for me if I even wanted it.

Thanks for the links, TNG. I am watching several at this point of each year, but I was only looking at 66-67s. It's a decent price for those, though, considering they have OBO.

I'm watching one that appears to be even more darkly toned than that last one you posted. Truth be told, I kinda like it and getting consistent color among all of them is not a requirement I ever set.

Oh yeah, I like that one spruuu, slight frosting maybe too. The thing about these toned ones is that they are done doing what they are gonna do generally. You have good taste and it will pay off.

I believe you are referring to the original coin posted, aristarchus, and no, I am not 100% sure. Too much detail is hidden by the splotchiness. The steps look really good, but that doesn't mean much because even a low MS FS 1951 isn't a pricey coin. If it were a BS coin and could make upper MS & FS, it would be a steal! I'm halfway tempted to buy it to find out...

I am pretty sure the first coin in this thread, the discolored or strangely toned one is a PROOF.
I conclude this by the field surface near the rim. It looks flat right up to it. A circulation strike kinda slopes upward near the rim.

I do agree with you, TNG. I think I see enough to tell, but it is fair to say that this one is difficult due to the discoloration. When I zoom in on an area, it looks like one of those Magic Eye things (which I happen to be pretty good at ). I should put that on my resume: "Proficiency in artificially manipulating eye focus for meaningless purposes."
