I go through boxes of halves quite a bit now. I always edge search 1st, then date search. I had never missed a silver edge searching until yesterday. After edge searching the roll, I began my date searching and there was a 40%er. I was kinda suprised I actually missed a silver from edge searching. But then I looked at the edge and saw why. This thing's edges look just like a clad coin! I had never seen this before. Pic below, the middle coin is the clad looking one if the pic is hard to see. Anyone know why this coin has the copper look to the sides?

What year is it?
It is worth noting that 40%er are clad. That means that there is a layer of one material pressed onto another material. Both layers are silver, but a different purity. So you should expect a seam on the edges. That does not explain why the color is copperish.
If that middle coin is actually 40% silver, I will need to stop edge searching!

I have a 1966 where part of the edge looks more copper than silvery. Remember that the core of the 40%ers are 79% copper, so in theory you should see some degree of copper on the edge. In practice, I have seen them all over the board, from all silver to pink to gray to nearly black.

1967. The front and back look like silver, but the edge does not. I've never seen anything like it.

I edge search also. Have found several 40% in other searchers obvious dumps (marked wrappers). I have also come across rolls of BU 40% that the edges were a bright orange.

On his first CRH, my brother almost missed a 68 that way. I saw his set it on top of a stack of search halves. If I hadn't said something.. he'd probably rolled it back up..Good catch..

with hcmusicguy as well. It's all over the map when it comes to edges on 40%'ers.

I've missed several over the years by just checking the edge of the coins. I put an old towel down on the table, these things are dirty as you know. After I peel off the paper wrapping, I check the edges with the roll in hand. I then put the roll/stack down and peel off one half at a time, from the top down. I move pretty fast checking for anything unusual or proofs. I've found odd counter-stamps, magician coins and even a DDO over the years. As I'm peeling off the halves, I'm create a pile to the immediate left. I've found more then one 40%'ers "after" the coin hit the pile! It's not just a visual check of the coins you need to do. You need to listen as well. The audio sound/check of the silver hitting the pile of junk clad is distinctive! Nothing like it. The sound will jump out and smack you in the face! The sound of clad hitting clad is a cha-ching sound. The sound of silver hitting clad is more like a thud sound.

Let us know if you find a 64 with clad!

I've noticed that myself.. When I first open a roll I'll search the edge and pull out the silver seen. I also check every coin for errors and other collectables. If I had not checked each coin I would have missed some 40%. I feel if I don't check each coin it's like deer hunting from a car.. you'll see some but you won't see the ones in the woods.. lol

pan4au- !

Here's mine. All are 40%'ers. Can you guess which one is the 68?
