I've shared this in the metal detecting forum, but thought I'd post it here, as well.

This morning I was metal detecting on a steep wooded hillside at a park along Lake Michigan, just north of Milwaukee, WI, when I dug up a 1943 Australian Shilling that was just two inches down.

It's in pretty good shape. I wonder if it was brought home as a souvenir by a GI during World War II and later lost?

It was much too steep for that sort of thing. They would have slid down the hill into the creek below, like I almost did.

Given that it's a 1943 S Shilling and it was minted in San Francisco, you could always say it has now returned 'home'.

16M were minted, 92.5% Silver.

Nice find!

Most likely, yes. Large numbers of American troops were stationed in Australia during the war, and they were paid in local money. The whole reason why we got the Americans to make additional coins for us during the war years was the influx of American troops and the inability of the local mints to increase production capacity to match the increased demand for coins.

I notice that this coin has an 'S' mintmark denoting that it originated from the San Francisco Mint.

I don't think so, but I would love to speculate that it never left America.

Just been researching some FACTS:
The U.S. Army Americal Division is the only army division to ever have seen combat in the Southern Hemisphere.

They were billeted in Melbourne for 6 months, before being sent to Guadalcanal. The Marines went in first, and they followed. They landed on 13th October 1942.

My daughter -in Law's grandfather name was Joe Salini. He served in the Americal Division. I have a copy of his well documented memoirs, given to me personally. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

I said to him:
"You are one of America's living treasures."
Quite a fascinating man to talk to.
Lived in the San Diego area after WW11.
He passed in 2011.
