My son found this coin. I tried Googling it and it seems to be an old Spanish coin. Or it's a replica. Any thoughts? Thank you!!

@DTR, first welcome to CCF. Second, your pictures are a bit blurry, but that looks like a replica to me (I think that these things are given out at pirate-themed birthday parties).

Quote:Oh yes, replica pirate coin Read here: http://www.sedwickcoins.com/fake_cobs.htm I don't collect this area, but that is a very helpful reference for anyone getting involved, and provided some amusing reading for me, as I have a couple of 1970s era replicas (always marked as such). One of them is a version of the gold plated #56379, and the other is a Philip II era Potosi 8 reales that's not like any on the Sedwick list.

Just verifying that this is 100% definitely a replica. We've seen this exact replica numerous times on the forum; they're mass-produced and promoted for using at pirate-themed events. Often the poster says they found it on a beach; apparently, people deliberately bury them in the sand, then have a "pirate treasure game" with a metal detector, treasure map or whatever, and look for them. Not all of them are found. Beach example 1, with links to another replica-seller. Beach example 2, more corroded. Once they get immersed in salt water, they start to corrode pretty quick; they are made of plated pewter or some similar base metal alloy.

Thank you all so much for the quick and friendly replies and sorry about the blurry pics. Very tempted to mess with my 9 year old and tell him it's worth thousands or I'll just bury it in the beach for the next sucker like me. Haha.
Have a good weekend y'all.
