I am new to the board here and I need some help with this. My wife is a German citizen and she has this silver memorial commemorative type coin. Does anyone know what this is? It has on one side "FREISTAAT BAYERN * DER MINISTERPRASIDENTENT". {The "A" has an umlaut} and the other side has "PATRONA BARVARIA".
It also has 1868-1968 and 999 on it. I know the translation just need to know about the coin. Any info on it or help to direct me where I can find out anything about it would be very appreciated. Thanks, Tony

I think this is not a coin but a privately made medal

It is a medal commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Free State of the Bavaria.
From your picture, it seems gold, not silver. Are you sure about the metal?
999 stands for the purity of gold.
Do you know how much the medal weights?

No, the Free State of Bavaria was established in 1918. Bavaria was a kingdom until then.

"Der Ministerpräsident" means "The Governor" but your wife will know that. :) Here is another one - same design but pure silver: http://www.muenzauktion.com/hoehn/i...?id=61027067
Your piece will be gold-plated silver. Have a look at the edge; should say something like "Bay. HauptmĂĽnzamt Feinsilber vergoldet". If you have such an edge inscription, you know that yours was made by the Bavarian Mint in Munich.

This "Patrona Bavariae" refers to the times when Mary was the patron saint of Bavaria. Especially in Catholic areas of the state, this is still quite popular.

Thanks to everyone, l looked and there is nothing printed on the rim at all.
I am pretty sure it is silver from look and sound.
Are these fairly common?
Wondering about what they sell for too.
Thanks all, Anton
