I literally found this1847 D gold no motto 5 dollar coin on the ground at work today.
I don't know much about grading coins and was wondering if this coin is worth sending off to be graded or if anyone knows the approx grade by looking at these photos.
Thanks

Looks to be in around "Fine" condition. Probably worth getting graded and into a holder.

If you "found" it, whomever lost it is surely very sick right now!

100% worth getting graded.

Definitely not in the greatest condition, but still worth getting graded & still worth at least $250 simply from melt value. Nice find!

Dahlonega gold is scarce in all grades. If authentic, it is worth much more than melt.

Send the coin to ANACS immediately. All gold from Charlotte and Dahlonega mints are worth a premium above melt value.

I would scour that debris for other valuables. That is an amazing find!

Not the best photos to grade from but the coin looks VF something. As the others mentioned, get this one graded and authenticated it is definitely worth the cost.

Try an ad or something to try and find the rightful owner. Lots of people lost everything.

I agree with sending this coin to be graded (ANACS is good if you just want it authenticated and graded); it is worth about $1000 - $1500 if certified.

get yourself some pure acetone and give it a soak, you don't want something happening to it considering where you found it and how it likely got there..who knows what kind of chemicals, corrosive etc things could be on the surface waiting to damage that coin..just to be safe.

Lol, I know it sounds crazy. But I literally walked by it. Kept walking because I thought it was a penny. Walked back by and realized I wasn't. Cpl in USMC, not a thief.

Down south of here, in Galveston, they found an entire shipwreck that had been buried for over a hundred years after a storm swept away a lot of beach sand.

The thought that a storm as big as Harvey might turn up a gold coin is not implausible. I've seen early 1800s gold from detectorists so making assumptions can sometimes bite you.
