I have made a tentative identification of this Roman coin.
I think it is a 'Revolt of Heraclius 608-610 AD
Berk 113
Can anybody confirm or re-attribute.
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Your coin appears to be Heraclius 610-641 AD, looks like it is Sear # 786, Tremissis.

Echizento,
My Sear reference materials do not extend that far.
I am assuming that my original guess was correct.
The Berk reference was a Tremissis as well
I will check your reference with a trip to the library
THANX again

"Roman" coins post-500 AD are normally classified as "Byzantine", or the more academically correct "Romaion". Echizento's reference to Sear will be to his catalogue of Byzantine coins.

Home from work, I can now actually look up my copy of Sear. It doesn't list any tremisses in their name for the period of the Revolt, only noting an "extremely rare" one which actually bears the name of the second-previous emperor, Maurice Tiberius.

The reverse inscription rads "VICTORIA AV..." - the AV would be short for AVG, Augustus or Emperor. I believe I can also see remnants of the AVG on the obverse legend, too. The coins of the Revolt don't bear AVG, as neither elder nor younger Heraclius was proclaimed emperor until Phocas was deposed.

At this time, the denomination of the gold coins can be read by what the cross on the reverse is sitting on: the solidus has the cross on a pyramid of steps; the semissis has the cross on a globe, and the tremissis has the cross by itself with nothing attached to the base.

This is not a revolt of Heraclii, but of the Emperor Heraclius after that period. The revolt last from 608- Oct 610. From 610-641 is when Heraclius ruled.

To All,
I wish to apologize to all on this tread, if I offended.
You were correct on your attribution of the specimen.
I am new to this arena of collecting. I received a collection recently from a relative (I am the only one who collects). But I collect more recent coins.
This is an entirely new experience. I do have some reference books:
Ancient coin collecting
Dictionary of roman coin inscriptions
Roman Coins vol I -> III by Sear
Greek Coins vol I & II bt Seaby
Roman Gold Coins of the Medieval World 383-1443AD by Berk

The last one was the one that led me down the garden path. The only representative that appeared similar was incorrect.

Will someone give me some advice on additional reference material?

Once again I am truly sorry if I offended anyone

No offence taken here, if you are going to consentrate on ancient coins you already have a good start with your references. Sears is the top reference but the set can be expensive. I would recommend getting a copy of Sear's Byzantine Coins and their Values along with a copy of ERIC (Encyclopedia of Roman Imperial Coins).
