Hi all new to the forum and pretty new to collecting but I am having a great time trying.

I was wondering if anybody new why it is that it seems nearly impossible for me to find 20c commemorative coins in circulation where in the same time I have most of the $1 and 50c Coins?

Thanks
Luke

Hi Luke & to the forum.

Which 20¢ commems are you after. The 1995 United Nations is the hardest to find these days. I'm still finding most of the others, admitttedly a bit few & far between, but they are around.

You have to keep looking extremely hard - I was joyful when I first found the UN 20c after 5 years! But that said, some other coins can be very tough without you realizing how difficult they can be. For example try looking for a 2000 $2 coin (non-commemorative) or the 1988 bicentennial 50 cents or the 1991 Merino Ram. Much easier said than done! The 2001 CoF set is amazingly difficult. I'm still looking for a few of the 20 cents.

G'day,
I found a UN 20c last week, in almost unc. condition.
I still find COF 20c occasionally: only missing two.
I have a theory: during the initial phase, many people, young or old, put aside the "pretty ones" that they receive in change. So, the new issues disappear quickly, and remain nearly uncirculated in condition. These people are not enthusiastic collectors, just people with a passive interest in commemorating whatever the coin is intended to commemorate.
During phase 2, which is marked by fiscal austerity and/or cash-flow stagnation, these people raid their money boxes, and bingo, near-unc coins, several years old, dribble back into circulation. If we're lucky, we pounce. Phase two lasts forever, I suspect.

A few months ago, in Darwin, I was getting lots of 2003$1 (women's voting), in near-perfect condition, and beautiful lustre, in my change. Of course, I hoarded them. Perhaps there was a pallet-load of them, overlooked in the back of a bank's or secutity company's vault. Or maybe my theory, above, came into play ...

If you find just finding the Centenary of Federation 20c coins hard then try to also to get the varieties.

The NSW, ACT, VIC and QLD come with two obverse varieties, characterised by IRB spaced (large head) and IRB joined (small head). The others appear to be IRB joined types.

The normal Platypus 20c for 2001 also can be found with varieties - Obv. IRB spaced / Rev. small SD; Obv. IRB spaced / Rev. large SD; Obv. IRB joined / Rev small SD and Obv. IRB joined / Rev. large SD. The most common in circulation is the last variety.

Have fun.

I've been pretty lucky over the last two weeks...

I found 2 Rams Head 50 cent coins last week, and today a round silver 1966 50 cent coin in a Brambles roll !

The COF 20 cent coins are very difficult to find.
