The 2nd of 2 coin I was waiting for came in today! This one looks blast white and what a portrait is has. Just look at it!! Elegabalus...218-222 AD Silver Denarius Minted: 221 AD Obv: IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, Draped bust right, laureate, horned Rev: PM TR P IIII COS III P P, Emperor standing left sacrificing out of patera over lighted altar, holding branch in right hand, star in left. Ric 46 Sear 7536 Ex: Warren Esty So it looks like my collection is really not going have a theme so to speak. I seem to be leaning towards an eclectic mix of coins with decent portraits instead. Just showing off...again. Thanks for looking...Mont.

That's a keeper for sure. Interesting in that it shows Elagabalus with something of a beard and also that it has the star in the reverse field. I'd remark further that from a propaganda standpoint, the overall effort with this issue would seem aimed at convincing the populace of his maturity and devotion to traditional Roman religious practices, both of which were widely doubted during his reign. The star may be symbolic of a claim to divinity as well.

I knew what it was but wasn't sure how to put it on a family friendly site.

Quote: I always found these depictions of Elababalus much more interesting for what they show on his head. I was letting that go by, but as long as it's come up, it also rather plays into the propaganda aspect I was commenting on previously. Viewed in that light, it can be taken as an assertion of his virility, which also was generally questioned. A lot going on with this particular coin.
