Hi all, particularly any Canadian token experts. I've recently acquired one of these tokens, and was hoping to find out more about them. All I can find on Google is more people selling them, for about $5 to $10 each, and a few sellers admitting they don't really know what they are or what they're for.
Canadian-Token:-Ottawa-Police-Department
Who and where: this part I am most certain about: the Ottawa Police Department.

What: it's about 31mm across, and appears to be made of fibreboard; I saw one seller claiming they are made of "clay", but it seems to be too lightweight for clay. It has the same design on both sides. Mine is brownish, but other examples on ebay and elsewhere range in colour from bright red, through earth-brown, beige, tan to rather grey. Given the continuum of colours, I assume the actual colour is unimportant. The coin club auction had two for sale, a "red" and a "brown"; I only bought the brown one. I assume there's no actual difference?

When: any idea on date would be helpful. Fibreboard (a mixture of epoxy resin and sawdust) was fashionable for token-making during and shortly after WWII, but frankly it doesn't look that old.

Why: with no information on the item itself as to denomination or purpose, what were they made for? They are apparently listed in the Atwood catalogue of transportation tokens (where they apparently have the reference number 675H), but if they're transport tokens, why is the police department running a bus company?

eBay example for sale.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Can't say for sure, but it's possible they were give-aways to children when 'Officer Friendly' came to visit classrooms, or encountered kids out on the beat.

In my day it was a police themed sticker or 'baseball card' type promo meant to build positive reinforcement to the notion that police don't always just show up when there's trouble.

When you saw an officer at the school, or on the street, us kids would actually approach them (rather than run in the other direction) in hopes of getting the latest "treat".
