It doesn't seem like additional guesses are forthcoming, so here's the reveal - I paid a whole $27 for this specimen, that amount being about 2X melt at the time. I was flabbergasted that even with the damage the dealer evidently wasn't taking into account how scarce and desirable the type is. I'd wager that if it were put up on ebay, bidding would top the $100 mark.

Indeed that seems like a great bargain, and yes, I think you might pull down something in the range of $100 for that coin on ebay. Ive found the market for holed colonial and early independence era coins from Central and South America is pretty strong on ebay (as you saw from the coin that started the thread). I will post some others after Squire takes his turn.

...below is a picture of the obverse and reverse of my latest "holed" silver coin. It is a 2 Schilling coin from the Hansestadt Hamburg (Germany) minted in 1727. I love the "time worn" appearance of this coin. If it could speak it must have some amazing stories to tell. From a historical and nostalgic point of view worth much more than what I paid for it... I like that nice dark patina on coins "of a certain age." Based on what I see for unholed coins on ebay, I'm guessing $5 US.

...pretty good estimates tdziemia and Arkie. I picked it up for $5 Australian or just under $4 US. The coin was amongst a batch that had just arrived at the shop. I received a little discount as I am somewhat of a regular But as I had mentioned previously, from the point of view of history and nostalgia this coin really "spoke" to me. I wouldn't want to sell it. And yes, I really like the dark patina also... Squire

Hi thq
The obverse of the King Louis 15th ECU does not have the date on it. Perhaps you could show the reverse also? As a first broad "guestimate", King Louis 15 ECU's sell for about $100. So maybe you paid $25-$30 for your coin?
I am considering the coins condition and the fact that it has a hole though it. Of course the historical and sentimental value is likely to be a lot more...

It was in the melt bin for $25. A polished 1769 with unreadable mintmark. The blurry focus hides a nasty scratch over the ear. Just a hefty cool looking pocket piece. I used to have a lot of holed gold dollars, but got rid of them. I hung on to a few holed California fractionals. This holed Newfy $2 has been plugged. Another melter, from a jeweler.

Cool thread. I don't have any holed coins of any value. I do have an 1832 Capped Bust Half Dime that looks like it had a hole repaired. Have no recollection what I paid for it though. I can post pics if you'd like.

Quote: Thanks tdziemia. Would be great to see some more of your holed coins I'll follow up with more of mine (already sold) when we get a couple of guesses on thq's Newfie gold. Since he said it was in a melt bin, I'll go with about 10% over melt, which these days would be just shy of about $145 (but could have been lower or higher, depending on when it was bought).
