On another thread http://goccf.com/t/315050 another Community member lamented that a 19th century Egyptian coin he had acquired had a hole drilled in it. When I began selling off some coins on ebay, I was advised to not expect more than melt value for any holed coins, but have found that many can command far more. I thought it might be fun to have a guessing game. Community members who have sold (or bought) holed coins post them, and let other Community members guess what they sold for. Not sure how to formulate rules, so let's try this: 1. Anyone can post a coin. 2. At least three guesses, then the member who posted the coin reveals the value and we move on. I'll start with this Mexico 1/2 real (melt value when sold was about $1): Edited by tdziemia 03/31/2018 12:35 pm

Melt value is a ridiculous concept for a scarce and collectible coin such as your 1740 1/2 Real with good eye appeal.
What is the market value to a collector for a complete coin in this grade? That's your comparable, not bullion amount.
Secondly, are the bidders on the coin all collectors, or are some of them dealers who will fill the hole in the coin and offer it for resale as 'restored'?
Having said all that, I'll bite, and say the selling price was between 10% and 25% of the coin's normal value.

Quote: selling price was between 10% and 25% of the coin's normal value interesting figures but perhaps rarity, patina, attractiveness could really influence this percentage I remember the recent selling at an international auction of an extremely rare Dutch arendrijksdaalder 1584, holed, estimated by the auction house at 150 $ and sold for 3000$ the coin was attractive indeed and so rare that the hammer price was realistic

It sold for 21 euro. https://www.coinarchives.com/99af56...age01250.jpg(and thanks for playing, @paxbrit)

I'll break my own rule This coin sold for $14.95, about 3 years ago. In ebay and CoinArchive searches of recent sales, I can find sales of the unholed coin in similar to slightly better grade at $28 and 21 euro. Time notwithstanding, it leads to a conclusion that the holed coin could be worth 30-50% of the value of the coin in similar grade with no hole.

My LCS offered me a holed US Trade dollar for $60; I didn't bite. On the other hand, I probably overpaid for this, but I was happy to have it -- even holed.

I'll say about 3X spot silver value, or $30. Certainly not going to see one of those too often.

the coin also has post strike wear and the hole was made in a rude way; these are negative points; I would guess no more than 20€

OK, @arkie, we have three guesses all in the $25-30 range. (I took a quick look on ebay, and see a number of unholed specimens, slightly higher grade, but some with issues like cleaned, having sold recently at $70-100). How much did you pay?

Well, while we're still waiting for that reply, I'm going to jump the gun on another example. Almost all my holed coins (which I generally eschew) have been plucked from the "bargain" bin for next to nothing, or at worst for melt if silver. This wasn't one of those, as these early hooknecked eagle type "Cap & Rays" 8 reales have become both desirable and pricey (more often than not nowadays commanding four figures.when XF or better). I didn't have one in my collection until this specimen turned up as part of a larger liquidated collection of "Cap & Rays", so I had to have it, worn and holed though it is. I will say as a hint that I thought the coin shop involved had it terribly underpriced, so much so that I considered it a "no-brainer" to pick it up.

Technically, it was part of a trade for a 1913D type II Buffalo probably VF. So you could say I got it for a nickel.
We valued it at $20.

Nice find Lucky Cuss I did a quick web browse of "price of 1824 Mexican 8 Reale Pieces with hole" I found an 1842 8 Reale piece with a big hole in it, maybe from a pistol bullet . This was selling for less than $10. But your coin is much nicer than that. With the hints that you had given I would be happy to pay $15 to $25 Australian or $12 to $20 US for yours. I think this is just over the melt value of the complete coin . Of course I think that the coin has much much greater historical and nostalgic value, in the sense that it has hung on the chest of a person of long ago, maybe a pretty Senorita... Squire

As far as value of mine goes, I need to emphasize that "Cap & Rays" 8 reales with this style eagle were produced only for the first couple years of the series. You'll see many hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of the facing eagle types from the decades that followed for each one of these that you'll encounter.

I was not all familiar with this type and its rarity, so I went onto NGCCoin. I can't tell if your coin is KM#A376.2 or KM#A376.5. Assuming it's the less rare of the two, it looks like unholed ones go for $400-500 in comparable grade, so I would guess $75 or even $100.

Great sense of humour Lucky Cuss Ok, so I will "up my guess" for the early cap Mexican 8 Reale piece with a hole in it to $50 US. I am keeping in mind your post with the reference to "terribly underpriced"... Squire PS. I also have a holed coin that I purchased recently and I shall trot that out when it is my turn...
