Hello. I posted this 1961 Lincoln coin on this forum last May 15. The coin is road damage and may even be a cull. There is, however, an issue about the coin that has been bugging me - the missing initials VDB on the bust and punched on the rim. Could this be possible? Your input would be appreciated. Thank you.
The VDB could not possibly be on the rim- it is part of the main design on the master dies and hubs, not added later. If it was a misplaced VDB, you would see it on hundreds of thousands or millions of coins. I do not know what you are seeing there, but it is likely a byproduct of the road rash. However, VDB initals are missing sometimes on the bust base due to excessive die polishing from refinishing the surface of the die. These are sometimes sold for a small premium(a buck or two) but the condition of the coin would negate any premium.
Hi. Thanks biokemist6. I still see an incuse V on the rim. I guess it's too much of a coincidence that a damage like this can occur and come up with the present situation. I will see where I can get a microscopic shot to verify that V and will inform you accordingly.
As biochemist said this could not possibly happen at the mint as the VDB is part of the hub. the die does not stamp the rim of the coin. the rim is added to the blank before the stamping process. This is post mint damage and nothing more.
