Hi,

Found this in change today & I have never seen one like this before. Is it just a well worn cent or an error of some kind. Your wisdom is appreciated.

The coin is altered. It wasn't struck like that.

@coop, just for kicks, any ideas on how it was altered? The details are all fuzzy like an acid bath, but the rim still seems to be in reasonably good shape.

Looks like a Dryer Coin to me.

I don't think this is a Dryer Coin. The rims are not rounded enough to be that. I always blame this on a rock tumbler. (I have no proof yet, but looking for someone to try to put a BU coin into a rock tumbler for a time and see if for sure that it looks like this?) Every thing looks flattened evenly. So I will know for sure when someone came perform this project. (Take images of the coin before, after and in between stages as it is multi stage process)

The coin may have been placed in between two pieces of leather and then hammered?

There another before/after picture to see what causes this. But if this was the case, the coin would be wider than normal and thinner:
