I am looking for an 1863 S Half Dollar and saw this one on the bay, Here is a perfect example of why you need to buy the coin and NOT the TPG grade! What do you think?

I will reveal the grade in a couple.

Personally I'd say VF-35 tops, but guessing I'm wrong!

I forgot to add my opinion, I would grade this at VF30 - VF35.

I think it makes xf40 by a mile. In fact, I will even go to xf45 given the nicely split stars. Love the hair detail and the eagle's neck feathers. Color is weird though, but is likely lighting.

I like Civil War coins, but San Francisco Mint issues don't count. The Civil War wasn't fought in Northern California and there it was like living in another country at the time.

It has a light reverse strike that gives the impression of circulation. Weird monotone color.

Technical grade 40. Eye appeal 4/10.

I've already seen this one so I'll redact my grade opinion other than to say that the slab it's in isn't very reliable.

VF-35. I'd like a clearer "E" on LIBERTY as that letter wears the first along with more leg detail on the eagle's wings for an XF, but even if it isn't really Civil War related, it's still certainly part of the Old West era of coins that continued right up until the last CC coin was issued. It is a nice strike though with the hair/star details, and may make 40 on a Friday due to this.

Those blue ANACS holders are known to be overgraded. This one is VF-30, maybe 35. Does not make XF in my opinion, and a 45 is way overgraded.

Sometimes original silver can take on that nice 'antique' look as my sees it in the close ups, but in the holder is showing 'cleaned' in neon.
