I have only heard of Black Beauties from the late 50's. I also have heard if the coin has lost it's luster it's impossible to tell if it's authentic. I don't really know how to tell if the coin still has it's luster or not.

What are your guys' thoughts?
It's hard to tell in the pictures but rather than being totally black, it's got area's that are more like dark brown.

Certainly more common then. Yours is darker than normal for sure, but could be environmental toning. If you use the search function in the top left of your screen with BLACK BEAUTY as the keywords, you will find loads of good threads discussing them.

I disagree with this statement.

Here is a recent CCF thread discussing luster:

So-called "Black Beauties" are simply nickels that have turned color due to some sort of environmental/chemical exposure. They did not leave the mint looking this way.

Nope. Check here, you have a discolored/stained coin. BBs are thought to be annealing (heat treatment) errors) or too much cobalt in the alloy.

Mr. Frog, I do disagree with your statement, BBs have indeed been found in mint packs! Altho, the luster and blue-grey tone do seem to tone up nicely as time flies...I do think it may have been a blank stock plate that was darker than normal and probably weren't as dark as the ones I have seen.

That is not a Black Beauty .
Frog , I have to disagree with you . Most of my BB's of 1959 I acquired in 1962 . I have rolls of these and they certainly left the mint that way . Nice even dark cobalt color .

Your coin has environmental toning/staining. You can see where some of it is wearing off the high points and revealing the original silver color underneath.

Keep searching!

Your coin has Environmental Damage, not a mint error.
