Good evening, This is my first post to this site. I tried googling my question but none of the Google answers were what I have. So hopefully one of you can point me in the right direction. My father inherited my grandfathers coin collection after he passed a few years back. Going through it the other day my dad found a 1951 penny. But the weird thing (or maybe it isn't) is that its not made from whatever normal 1951 pennies are made from. Its all a Silverman color and about twice the thickness of one. But the weirdest thing is that its like totally backwards, even Lincoln's head and the wheat pic on back are all indented rather then raised. I was thinking maybe a die from wherever it was stamped? Really ive no clue. I'm going to try and upload pics, but maybe if you understand what I'm talking about you could tell me what to actually search google for? Thank you for any and all help.

Search "Soft die" on http://www.error-ref.com a soft die is an image transfer means of amateur counterfeit coins. We do need a pix to be really sure, but your description is of a man-made object, nothing the mint produced. To the forums! This is a coin mage from soft dies, the details are very poor. The reverse image that made this was quite unclear.

No need to Google search. You are in the right place to get some answers. Pics would certainly help in this case. Review the Tutorial for posting pics. It sounds like it is probably a homemade item using actual coins as dies to make impressions in a soft metal disc.

I'm leaning toward Crazyb0's explanation, but pictures would be appreciated.

Is the writing backwards? I'm trying to think of how you could make something that it indented, as you said, but facing the right way.

Ugh, I don't know how to post pics. I've been following the instructions to do so 4 times now but it just loads and loads and loads... It does look almost exactly like the pic Crazyb0 showed, except like I said picture was wrong way along with writing and everything else. Ill give it another go. But thank you for the quick help, was figuring I'd be waiting for days if not weeks to get any sort of answer. Appreciate you guys helping so quick

That took some serious pressure to create. It's not an error, but I can certainly see why you would ask.

Okay, probably lead as Numisma mentioned and it looks to have taken a couple tries for the reverse, as DrDon cleverly pointed out. I would keep it as a curiosity/conversation piece, but it has no value.

I like how the reverse is double punched! Definitely a neat piece.
