help with this 1952 cent weighing 2.78 grams. coin does not seem to be out of round like I would expect from a PMD hit. might anyone know of foreign planchets for that year? or if there is a way to tell if it is just an incomplete / rolled thin planchet as coin looks evenly thin on the edge when flipped 180 and the weakness is on both obverse and reverse, or if is it really just PMD... and if so could you please explain a little as to why PMD
Thank you

I appears to me to be rolled thin on the west side of the coin.

Looks like it. The weight should be slightly less.

It does appear to be struck on a thin/underweight planchet. There is appropriate weakness in the strike and I don't see any evidence of acid damage.

I'm thinking struck on a tapered planchet. The planchet was cut close to the starting end of the strip where it's tapered down to enter the rollers so the planchet is thinner on one side than the other. The result is a planchet that is underweight, of the proper to mention, but thinner on one side than the other. After upsetting the planchet will still have raised rim all the way around, but weaker on the tapered side. Coin struck from such planchet will often show full or nearly full rims the lack of detail on one side due to a lack of material and it will typically be underweight. The coin in question here seems to fit this.

Thank you spruett001 and coop as always for your time to reply and knowledge.
conder101 thank you for the detailed analysis. it explains it very well and makes cents..lol..
I do not know alot about this but after further thought I would think, if the entire planchet was rolled thin the entire strike would have been distorted/weak? So Thank you for the education

You are correct. How weak a strike depends on how thin the planchet is. My post wasn't very clear, but I'm glad Conder101 explained it so thoroughly, as usual. The proper term is, as mentioned, struck on a tapered planchet.

Tapered planchet seems most likely. To me seems tapered or thin on two sides and both edge views. I'm flagging for future reference. Thanks, Doug.

I am in agreement that this Wheat cent was struck on a Tapered Planchet. Here's the link to Tapered Planchets. http://www.error-ref.com/tapered-planchets/
