The reverse doesn't seem like it, but the obverse has that real smooth shiney look to it like some of the older proofs.

Doesn't look it to me. Also, 1968 proofs are usually not the "old" look. They are much more modern looking (although not always cameo)

I should have done more research, because it looks like the '68 proofs had the S mint mark.
Rest in Peace

Haha. I thought that was why you were asking. It would be a great find to find a proof without a mint mark. (I don't think there are any known 1968 Cents, but there are some other examples)

Correct. At least you got there eventually.

Indeed!

Then you have the modern haters who think anyone can buy a mint set and pull 65+ examples at will. The old "they made billions" argument I've heard from every dealer I know.

It makes me sick to think that a lot of these coins won't be readily available for future collectors. I used to be able to pull nice gemmy and Gem '68 cents from mint sets because this date came very nice. But now every single one that I didn't stabilize in alcohol is ruined. This wouldn't be important except that so few collectors were setting any aside. I'm sure they've all had the same experience and this coin was probably spent by a disappointed owner who saw no reason to hang onto a spotted example. A lot of these being seen in circulation like this now were Gems before they were damaged.

I've been thinking of trying to put together a nice gemmy set from dealer stock to see just how difficult it has become. So many coins have been lost in the last ten years and so many collectors disappointed when they checked their rolls and mint sets.

Our generation have been very poor stewards of modern coins. We simply sat back and watched as most of them were lost, corroded, worn, or destroyed by time. The conventional wisdom is that they made so many billions that all will be common forever and then nobody collected them.

Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

cladking~!

And another thing. Way back when I found this forum looking for knowledge, support, encouragement etc.
I read post after post of "modern clad crap", "chuckey cheese tokens" "billions minted"
"never be worth more than face value" etc. etc.etc. It wasn't very encouraging for some
new collectors. I myself have some CAPS albums I have never / will never post pictures of
due to these type remarks. And some are very nice! So sad.....

And I am made to suffer by not seeing them! Double sad!

I say post them anyway! The detractors can get over it!

Debrajc, you are so right about the hatred towards anything not made of precious metals.

An immense number of "collectors" on this board are simply bullion speculators or coin flippers with no interest in anything but a quick profit. The idea of collecting something interesting like the America The Beautiful state park quarters is as foreign to them as a fine single malt Scotch is to a skid row bum.

Collect what you like, let them complain about the mint stealing their money by actually issuing collectors coins for over face value.
