Hi, I just found this site and think its awesome! I have a 1964 Jefferson nickel that was in my Dad's collection that I got when he passed away several years ago. Thanks in advance for any info you guys can pass along. The pictures I posted are with a 1974 Jefferson for comparison. It seems to be slightly smaller in diameter than a normal nickel, thinner, and weighs about half what the 1974 weighs (but that is just on a food scale). When dropped, It had more of a "ting", or ring similar to a silver dime, not the solid dull sound the 1974 makes. I have seen pics of nickels struck on a dime planchet, but this is much larger than a dime. I am (for lack of a better word) stumped. Common sense tells me that if it was damaged to the point that the thickness has changed so much, the detail would be gone as well. Can anyone give me any insight?

I think I will wait for the experts on this one. What weight did you have on the food scale?

Thanks for the warm welcome! The 1974 weighs 4 grams on a weight watchers food scale, the 1964 weighs 2 grams

Thin planchet stock. Didn't have enough metal to properly fill in die devices.

I agree with coop. Looks like it was struck after the split. Your Dad had a good eye. Congrats!

The 1974 (a normal nickel) should weigh 5 grams, but it shows the other one is seriously underweight.

This is an acid job. The perfect centering, lack of a design rim, smaller-than-normal diameter, blurred details on both faces, and a rippled surface in some areas are all obvious red flags.

Thanks Mike. I thought the issue of the distortion on LIBERTY reminded me of that. The lines on the obverse also reminded me of that on a coin I acquired years ago: Second one down. I did miss the missing rims and reduced diameter. But we learn/remember a little at a time.
