*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***

I bought a lump of old U.S. coinage from a friend who had inherited it from her mother. This was in there. Die break? There is a hairline crack visible on the obverse from the rim at the right side of the date extending across Lincoln's torso to the rim on the opposite side.

You should include the date, mintmark, and the denomination in your titles.

Why Topic Titles are Important

The title of your topic is very important. Let's say you need help attributing an 1896 Morgan Dollar....

  • Horrendous: Help!

  • Bad: Need help with coin

  • Better: Need help with Morgan Dollar

  • Good: Need help with 1896 Morgan Dollar

  • Awesome: Need help with VAM on 1896 Morgan Dollar

This enables the members with expertise pertaining to your question to easily find and answer your question. The title of the topic also becomes the title of the topic's web page, which enables us to attract more collectors to the site. The more members we have, the more we learn.

Thanks for the tip Fuzzy. I had trouble focusing the camera to get closer shots. Hope the pics show enough detail.

Appears to be a planchet lamination issue.

Interesting, but it adds very little to the value.

Still very much worth keeping.

moxking has it right. It is most noticeable above the date. Lamination usually follows a straight line but can have irregular shapes.

@boris, based on these pics, it looks most like a lam to me--starts over the date and then perhaps progresses onto Abe at about the level of his bowtie. It is unclear to me if there is damage to the right of the date.

Here is a bit of a close-up of one of your pics:
