I recall someone posting a link or explanation of the different symbols used on large size notes as a way to tell when a note was printed.

It was longer than just the hollow star or solid star.

I've tried different words and cannot seem to find what I'm looking for.

Does anyone know/remember this post--or am I losing my marbles?

The printing year/years on all currency (large or small) can only be determined by the signature combination on the note. The use of stars (prior to the replacement note era) or the prefix/suffix device shown as a suffix in the serial number below has nothing to do with the date of issue, but was simply a symbol used in the era before the necessity of prefix and suffix letters.

Thanks, Coinfrog. I wasn't sure of that either. I do know that some series were printed for years and years after the date stamped on it.

The series dates didn't change often during the large note era if the principal design remained the same - usually it was accompanied by a change in the color or size of the seal. In the case of the Black Eagle above, this issue remained the series of 1899 until the end of the large note era nearly 30 years later, spanning nearly a dozen different signature combinations.
