Hi all,

I inherited a collection from my grandfather that included rolls and rolls of Canadian coins. It looks like they came straight from the bank, but a relative must have gone through them at some point because I see fingerprints and discoloring. They were not in tight, bank-rolled rolls.

I'm trying to decide about selling them and buying coins I enjoy collecting, or keeping them as part of my grandfather's collection.

Here's what's he had:
1965-67 Dollars: 40 of each year
1965-67 Half: 40 of each year
1965-67 Quarter: 80 of each year
1965-67 Dime: 100 of each year
1965-67 Nickel: 90 of each year
1965-67 Penny: 100 of each year

What do you think? Any advice appreciated.

Unless they are high MS, you won't get much above bullion value but the good news is, at bullion value you will do quite well compared to face value.

I was in a similar situation with my father's collection this past year. Some of his coins I needed for my collection to fill a gap or an upgrade. Others that were duplicates I will sell and buy a few coins I need so I will remember my dad both by the coins that were his that I kept, and the new ones acquired from the value of his duplicates.

I am not saying to do what I did, just saying it is important to feel you do right with whatever you decide.

the 65 penny you could look for the large bead pointed 5 version which is worth it if you find one in decent shape. but I agree, the rest is just bullion.

As mentioned above you'd have to be at MS-64 (break even after grading fees) and higher on the dollars and 50 cent pieces. Expect about 10 x Face value from dealers and about 14 to 17 x face value in the retail market for the 65-67 Dollars and 50 cent pieces. Silver weight for the smaller denominations, just be aware that in 1967 the 10 & 25 cent coins were of mixed silver content (some 80% & some 50%) so most dealers use a blended rate to buy them as melt. I wouldn't give the pennies and nickels any value beyond face. All this assuming circulated and handled coinage.

Thanks - I think I'll save a few coins of my grandfather's and sell the rest (after checking the pennies of course!)
