Hi...this is my first post. I acquired a gold coin from the 1968 Mexico olympics that is 3.1 ounces and 999.9 % gold. I believe it's an commemorative coin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I moved your post to the appropriate section for the proper attention.

Can you post an image of the other side?

The closest I could find to match your Coin/token was https://www.worthpoint.com/worthope...s-1696121768
... although the weight is different at 3.93 g (0.14 oz) and it is not stamped HH 999.9 as yours is!
Maybe gold plated copies were also produced to commemorate this event?

Here is the other side of the coin. I checked and all I could find is maybe it was made in Paris. Any help in identifying this coin would be appreciated. Does anyone's know what's worth? Do not want to melt it down for the gold.

Thanks

Your medal appears to be similar to this one:

https://www.poinsignon-numismatique...e_46015.html

However, the one listed there is given as 34mm and 17g (=0.59oz) and 0.920 fineness (approx. 22kt) -- giving it a bullion value of about $800. Note also that yours is marked above MEXICO and the one above is instead marked to the right of the thrower's left foot, with the number 1 and a privy.

If your medal is really 3.1 oz of "four nines" gold, it would have a bullion value around $4,135. I suspect that yours is, in fact, .9999 gold-plated (probably HGE/heavy gold electroplate) over a base metal, but testing would be needed to confirm that.

As to the issuer, I can find no information on either yours or the one listed on the website above, but France does seem to be the point of origin. The Greek lettering is OLYMPIA / ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑ.

Maybe the original poster can also confirm that the weight originally posted ... 3.1 OUNCES ... was correct?

That would seem to be a prohibitively expensive item, unless as already noted, it is plated.

Found this one: https://subastas.catawiki.es/kavels...cs-1968-gold

Listed as 3.1g, sold for 133 euros in 2015. Couldn't find any more info about it though.

Yes, the coin is 3.1g. Interesting that not much info is available. Thanks for the replies and the link

3.1g is a much more realistic number for a .9999 fine gold item :) Good work Alpha!

The original gold medals were 34mm and 17g. and not marked with a fineness.

Can you tell us what the two letters are before the 999,9?

HB? Hg? HE?
