I have not made any special provision for my collection, and neither of my sons is a collector.

If I still have my wits about me in 10 to 15 years (earlier if I lose interest), I will cash it in. I probably should write out some instructions on the best way to dispose of it, in the event I die suddenly, but haven't.

It has meaning to me, but when I'm gone, it's just another asset in my estate, and one that is more likely than not to be handled improperly. Hence my logic about disposing of it myself.

My son collects too, so he'll be getting it. He's told me he'd keep it in tact, but realize with life's ups and downs that's not always going to be possible. At least for him, he knows how to value the coins and should be able to get the most he can for anything he does decide to sell.

Both of my boys love to CRH Lincoln Cents. My older son shows an interest in the rest of my collection but mind you he is only 12. I`d like to see my wife hold onto everything until the boys are older. Hopefully I still have a good 40 years to go though.

I'm going to die with my collection intact.
At least that's the current plan.
My wife can do as she pleases with it.
If she wants to convert it to cash she know who to give it to to accomplish that.

Of course this assumes I die first which is most likely.

I used to think more about my possible demise when I was involved in dangerous sport (which I'm not at this time). To this end, I took out a life ins policy and also left written instructions in the safe how to auction off my collection.

Given time, though, as in dying of old age, I don't expect there to be much left of my collection. Very likely, I'd have sold it to pay for living expenses.

I will be leaving my collection to my now 30 year old son.
He doesn't seem to have much interest in old coins but
does in bullion. He will most likely sell most of the US
coins and hold on to the bullion.

He knows some of the dealers I buy from so he will have
a place to dispose of what he doesn't want to keep.

He doesn't have children "yet" but I would like some
of it put away for a grandchild to inherit once they
are grown.

Only time will tell. I will be better equipped to answer the question in 30-40 years.

Lucky you! Most of us (well me anyway), don't have 30 or 40 years left!

My Father left this,

Don't take it personal but that reminds me... I don't want my kids cursing me out after I die for leaving them a stinkin disorganized mess, even if it's worth thousands! I don't want my problem to become their problem. The plan is to just put me in the ground with as little aggravation as possible.

What the heck do I do now?

I'm kind of in the same boat. Although we all have different situations. Assuming all three have zero interest. I plan to sit all three down, make my intentions known so we are all on the same sheet of music with no surprises. Plus it will be in writing.

Out of the three, there's one that's more reliable and responsible.......and the other two know it. The more responsible one is the executor of the estate. If she still has no interest in the collection, it won't cost her anything to just hold onto it and protect it. My "hope" (and that's a big HOPE) over time (after I'm gone), is that a sentimental value would take hold and others in the family would take a serious interest in the collection.

Bottom-line: If things should change, I'm always beating the bushes (looking and listening) to determine who that (lucky) go-to person (whether it daughter's, son-in-law or grand kids) will be to best maintain, protect or carry on the collection. It's a crap-shoot!

Good food for thought. I also have no one in my family that would be interested in collecting, so I will likely whittle my collection down to some selected favorite slabbed items that they could easily keep as heirlooms for future generations. No grandkids yet, so my plans may change over the years.

What most never noticed is when you join this forum, you will be automatically put into a list of people that will have all future assets go to me.
As to when I pass, no relatives that care or know about coins. So someone will have to take them all to a bank and just deposit it all as just coins.

I want to be like Tut and spend eternity with my treasures so I've instructed my wife to put my carcass and my collection in a "Bagster" and call the pickup service.

For me this all goes into estate planning. Since our will was drafted over 20 years ago, it's time for an update. My youngest is showing some interest in collecting, so I may name him as the recipient. But, depending on future needs, my collection may end up being liquidated to fund necessary expenses.

I hope to have enough good years left to build my collection. Otherwise it's not going to be a problem if I go sooner rather than later. I just started upgrading my Lincoln collection so my more valuable coins are in a nicer album. My plan is to aquire better coins but not too many that it's a problem later (says every new collector). My son is interested in coins now but his interests may be quite different than mine when my time comes. I hope to have a well organized collection that he can keep, change or sell as he sees fit. My wife already said the penny rolls and tubes are going to Coinstar so you CRHs should watch the obituaries for a good opportunity.

I hope my heirs will appreciate it for sentimental reasons. They either "get it" or they do not. Ultimately I have no control over what they do with it. I will be dead, so it does not concern me too much.

If I haven't sold it off before hand, I plan to state in my will or instructions to my executor to give them to CCF Mom & Dad.

I'm 55 and starting to downsize, selling extras, multiples, etc. I have over 3,000 cataloged and hope to get down to Dansco's filled with my best. Hopefully, my grandchildren will express interest (they are young still) and plan for that.
