Hi all,

Found this is this a misaligned die error or an off-center strike?

I know it is somewhat minor, but how much is the alignment off... what is the best way to determine that?

Thanks!

Almost a collectable MAD coin. The reverse weakness is missing. Very close though.

@E4E, I think that in general MADs only have increased numismatic value if the coin is missing parts of the inscriptions or other design elements. Yours is pretty close and could merit a spot in a 2x2 as an exemplar. As to calculating the percentage of mis-alignment, I'm not sure.

Thanks for the input and the welcome!

Even with the wear and flatness on the date... the bottom of the 5 doesn't seem it ever made it on the planchet...

Since I am new I am happy with this find :)

Hey Coop... not sure exactly what you are meaning about the REV weakness, I should be looking for... Can you expand on that a bit? Or do you have a link you can direct me too to read more about it?

:)

Eye4Error, click on this link for Misaligned Die and look at the reverse side of the coin and you'll know what Coop means. There will be very helpful and very informative information on error-ref.com. I suggest you check out this link. http://www.error-ref.com/horizontal...-hammer-die/

Ok I see... thanks for the example!

I did notice this on the REV... DIME is missing the top of the "ME" and the EPU is extra fat on the east side. Other than that a bit of mechanical error on some of the lettering...

When the devices fall over the edge, the reverse shows weakness opposite the area where the die is not pressing during the strike:

Thanks for clearing that up Coop... trying to gain some understanding here...

As for terminology... what kind of error is my dime?

It is still a MAD, but not a collectable as the devices are not over the edge of the coin. Sometimes there is no devices close to the edge of the rim, but we can see a weakness on the other other side.

Another example of weakness on reverse, but devices are close to the rim.

So the weakness on the opposite side tells me if it is a collectable or not.
