This is the first time the penny box I got from the bank turned out to be full of original rolls of Unc 2018 shields. I had wanted recycled LMCs and LWCs to look through. Not knowing what to expect and having seen the CCF posts re the forehead cracks, obverse clash and reverse shield edge cracks, I didn't want to look through them all so I sampled 6 rolls. Found 3 so far with these diagonal lines in the reverse shield running southwest to northeast. I don't think they are PMD as this box is straight from the reserve (all Unc), the lines are only in the recessed portion of the vertical shield field. All contain the identical left of shield polishing lines. I'm not an error or cent expert so any thoughts or assistance would be appreciated. Findings to come after the 6 rolls are done.

What you are seeing is Feeder Finger Damage. I have a couple of those as well as two of those from 2017. There are no premiums on those.

Are these marks on the incuse design versus the relief (raised) design? Hard to tell for me but appears to be on the incuse. I thought feeder fingers also but feeder fingers would mark the high points, or both, shouldn't they?
Am I correct on the polishing marks, left side of the shield?
Thanks for your input

The left side of the shield is from Feeder Finger Damage. The ones I have are at the top right of the shield and end where yours shows on your cent. Those aren't polishing marks. I borrowed this learning tool from Mr. Coop. He helped when I had the same question as you. I hope this helps explain better what you're seeing!

Ok a question, class: Why does the shield stripes show a line on every other one and not on all of them?

@ coop, because only the positive on the die is affected not the negative.

Very close. When the feeder finger die scrapes happened, there was one scratch that touched the sub devices and die not touch the shallow devices. Thus the shallow stripes would be affected and the deeper ones were not touched on the die by the Feeder Finger Damage. Another first time sighting of this happening. So are we up to another question on this topic? What makes the feeder fingers scratch the die? (I remember asking this before, but no one guessed on it)

Partially correct. When the timing is off, the feeder fingers get damaged. By what? When they get struck, they bend very slightly, but that is all it takes to damage a die and sub/shallow devices and to remove this takes a polishing that alters the fields. Sometimes they show on the edge like this coin on the lower left area of the shield. But the coins will show it until they polish the finger feed damage away.

I almost got through the process in my head when you posted. After I posted, I thought there must be more to it than just timing and realized that the finger must be bent.

Thank you Coop and all, you intuitively got to the meat of my question providing, as always, a learning lesson and explanation as to the why and how behind the topic.
I always appreciate the knowledge.
