Quote: Beautiful rare coin but the Washington pocket piece story is just that, a story True, but it is a plausible one. These were made to try and secure a coining contract by a firm in England, and typically if you were trying to secure such a contract from a European or other government, you would send the ruler a "special" piece to impress and gain a favorable nod. So the idea that they would send a gold example to Washington is not far fetched. Whether he carried it as a pocket piece is unknowable unless some contemporary documentation shows up some day.

I don't doubt he could have owned/been given it at some point. That said though even if he did own it the idea of him carrying around a pocket piece of himself goes against everything we supposedly know about him.

Wow. Makes me wonder how a coin like this gets to XF45. If George didn't carry it, maybe Martha had it in her change purse.

Quote: More info here. Click on "view brochure" for lots of stuff on the provenance including images of historical documents. Very interesting!

With two days to go the bid sits the same for the Washington and the 1854 S $5 sits at 1.86 million with the BP

1.74 million final for the Washington, weak price overall in my opinion.
Edit to say I do hope people realize to use PCGS

Quote: Edit to say I do hope people realize to use PCGS Why? At this level of privileged coins, only the extreme elite will be involved. This is a one of a kind coin(if that, more a specimin or even token). It holds it's very own WELL KNOWN special provenance and is (has been) recorded as such. Yeah, on other high value coins for purposes of expedited value, a coin coffin from PCGS may trump an NGC or ANACS, but all is within one's perception and preference. No need to slam one or the other, hey, if you don't like it, YOU buy the coin and get it reslabbed yourself!
