I'm going to say it's some type of post mint damage as it looks like someone started or tried to put a hole there.

Yeah I was quite taken back when I saw the mint mark -- super strange, never seen one like it!

So you were right - that was a short lived dream :)
When I looked at the wole coin I realized there was another mark on the obverse that I hadnt even noticed - it definately was someone trying to make a hole - sorry for not looking at the coin closer! I'm an idiot :)

Your original pic made me think it could be a rare variety, but after looking at the obverse, it's only a hole, unfortunately.
