Hi Reales gurus. I have mentioned several times in this forum that 8R scare me and I generally veer away from them. However, I am interested in the below coin and was wondering if anyone can share their thoughts on it. I know this is a common type the strike seems a bit soft, especially on the reverse (see left pillar) but something about that chopmark is drawing me to this coin. I generally don't like chopmarks but I feel this one adds something to this coin. Anyone know anything about it? Any other impressions would also be appreciated.

If authentic, that's a pretty nice coin. I'm not so sure that's a chopmark per se as opposed to a counterstamp. I don't see anything that raises a red flag for me (except maybe for the style of the "1" in the date), but with this genre, it's always back to the basics. What does it weigh? Are specific gravity and/or XRF results disqualifying? What does the edge look like? Even chopmarks and counterstamps can be (and have been) faked.

none of that information is available; it's PCGS certified AU Detail (Chopmark)

Obviously I thought you were asking about a raw coin. PCGS & NGC both have mistakenly certified some of these, but in general if you're a buyer, well, that's the way to buy one.

The coin looks fine to me, the left pillar is merely suffering the effect of being on the back side of the chop/counter stamp. Personally I like nice 8 reales with a single (or just a few) significant interesting chopmarks. Nice coin.

@JFransch - you're absolutely correct about the left pillar, for some reason I had attributed the full flatness to weak strike - silly me. And I'm with you on this chopmark, it adds an interesting attribute to this coin.

I'm contemplating a bid but am debating what's a fair price. I think around $150 or so I'm a buyer.
