Found this quarter in my change recently. Can't really find anything similar. So it just may old and worn out. Can't hurt to ask.

@monaliza, first welcome to CCF. Second, your coin has suffered wear and tear from use. The flattened areas, scratches, and peck marks on this quarter are all just damage and you can safely spend this coin.

Old is a relative term. If I was born in 82, I would be young again. The coin has had a hard life. It's been damaged while in circulation. It's not an error. True errors happen at the mint during the minting process.
