I never noticed before but going through about 100 or so 1953-D pennies, I noticed some have the dates nearly touching the "D". Very visible. Any information on this? Just curious. I am looking for error pennies. Thanks!

@SC, it sounds like you are saying that the mintmark and date vary in distance between each other. The date should be staying in the same place from coin to coin, but as the minmarks were added by hand, their position (and orientation) varies somewhat.

See that triangular area formed by the coat, rim and date? That's the target area, as long as the mint mark doesn't effect any of these it is considered to be OK.
Thanks everyone. There are too many of both groups to be errors. But there is a slight difference in space that can be seen. I have been lucky to find a few error cents of other sates. Two 1943 steels with missing #4. Really neat.
