I was drawn to the Peace dollars as a young boy. It was an attainable set and the Morgan dollars seemed too far out of reach for me. My circulated set pleases me but I am lurking for a great example to replace the one in my 7070.

I think the image of Liberty is simply prettier than on the Morgans. I just read that Quote: The sculptor [Anthony de Francisci] based the obverse design of Liberty on the features of his wife, Teresa de Francisci.[23] Due to the short length of the competition, he lacked the time to hire a model with the features he envisioned...Anthony de Francisci recalled that he opened the window of the studio and let the wind blow on his wife's hair as he worked.[23] However, he did not feel that the design depicted her exclusively.[14] He noted that "the nose, the fullness of the mouth are much like my wife's, although the whole face has been elongated". Wikipedia even shows a picture of Teresa that appeared in a newspaper. She was a pretty woman! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_dollarEdited to add link to Wikipedia article.

The shallow relief combined with weak strikes makes a lot of the details of the engraving (which was on the light side itself) not visible. So you end up with a coin that is not all that visually appealing to me, especially in uncirculated examples. I only own three but I do have a toned, circulated example that is really attractive. It is a shame these did not circulate much because if they all toned like this one, they might get more attention.
I will try to post a picture later.

It is rumored that disgruntled Carson City ex-mint employees, still angry about being put out of a job decades earlier clandestinely struck a few of these. They were caught, but the coins were never recovered - until the safe deposit box of one of the men's grandson was opened recently upon his death.

I don't have any Peace dollars. I think Morgans and Walkers are the two most beautiful coins ever minted. But of course I collect crusty old copper cents because of their history.

It's my favorite. Pax Americana, the fact that its common and usually in bad shape speaks to the hard work put forth by that generation. It hints at Art Deco and tradition simultaneously has both fine detail and a proud centerpiece. I'm a novice but it was favorite on sight, since I have grown to appreciate others but still think its the most 'striking'.

Minority opinion: I think it's a beautiful coin; very artistic.

1. No popularity interest so collectors just ignored them 2. Poor strikes made them look worn before they were worn 3. Didn't fit into gum ball machines 4. Didn't fit into coke machines 5. Came out to late in time.

just carl - the problem with all silver dollars is that they made holes in pockets, then slid out of the perfectly-fitted holes.
nss-52 - was that safety deposit box in Shanghai? I eagerly await the 1922-cc discovery.

Peace dollars have always been among my favorite classic coins, easily my favorite dollar. I have a handful, but only have this image handy; cherry picked as payment for an estate I helped liquidate in 2013

This post inspired me as I am not a collector of US coinage. I thumbed through the ebay listings and found a lot of 4 different supposedly BU years and bought them. I'm on my tablet now. Will post sellers pics later when at my desk. I have to admit I like the Peace obverse more than the Morgan for its simple stylistic beauty.
