I was just handed a 1878 1$ lady liberty head only facing left. The flying eagle on the back. My question is this, above IGWT and below States of why would it have the word "copy" stamped on it? I have been told by 2 different numismatists 2 different opinions. 1 says its real, the other not. Anybody else[img]

It's a copy of the real thing, which is an 1878 Morgan dollar. It probably looks similar to my avatar.

to the CCF!

@T3vwdude, first welcome to CCF. Second, your coin with the word COPY stamped on it is not real. It may be silver and have value, but it was not made by the US mint.

More than likely from the National Collectors Mint! Thy mint several different copies of vintage coins and in order to make them legal and not be passed as counterfeit they must by law, say copy on them. I have a 1964 Morgan from them and on the reverse it says copy.

How easy would it be to remove the word "COPY"?

It would lead to less temptation to dishonesty, if the word "COPY" was stamped into the field, not raised above it.

Even if COPY were removed it's easy to see the difference on those replicas.

"Perhaps not to put too finer a point on it", (Sir Humphrey - Yes Minister), but
a copy is converted into a fake, when the word 'COPY' is removed.

The person who said it was real is not a numismatist

But it is a real copy of a real coin so in that instance, it is real.

Doesn't sound like there is much to read into on this; it is what it says, a "COPY."
