Greetings. I usually post in the errors section but I don't think this fits there so I will ask here. This 1920 D Wlh half is a nice coin but has had lots done to it. Is there any value in a coin like this at some grading level or do you just offer it as cleaned and see what happens? Thanks for your inputs. Rich *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Hole filler if you need it, bullion value if you don't.

ok what a shame. it has nice value regardless of grade. do we figure someone cleans them to try and fool someone into buying a higher grade coin?

You could always try to let it tarnish back down...might make the cleaning less noticeable. Might. Probably won't do much to help that condition.
If it were a rarer date overall, you'd still have a premium. But alas, no such luck.

Looks like a good pocket piece candidate.

Silver spot is about all for value.

Every nimrod that cleans a coin likes this one has been cleaned ... truly believes they are increasing its value. Try to tell them otherwise and some will even snap back with something like ..."but I bet you want it ... don't you?"

Not just cleaned, but "whizzed".

Good call Jbuck. That'd make a great pocket piece.

The value is in the metal. Of course it could be a hole filler in an album as other have mentioned.

It's been harshly cleaned. Worth melt value.

I've put coins like this in antique auctions where they realize crazy prices, thanks to impulsive, uneducated, competitive bidders. To a coin dealer or serious coin collector, the value is basically whatever silver melt is. A few years ago, I consigned a bunch of low grade, common coins to a local antique auction. The lot that mostly stands out in my mind was a page of twenty, common date Mercury dimes. At the time, they were wholesaling for 12x face. They were bid to $6 each, being 60x face, and the top bidder took them all. The commission I paid was 20%.
